FAQs for Meridian Waste - Raleigh Hauling
How does it all work?
Once you have filled one of our roll-off containers, the waste is taken to one of our two commingled recycling facilities. The trucks drive onto our scales so that we can calculate their gross weight and then proceed to the tipping pad.
Once the truck is at the tipping pad, the mixed loads are emptied into the co-mingled pile. If your load is already separated, it is emptied into its respective pile or close to its designated bin. The sorting process begins with our co-mingled pile. The laborers begin by pulling out all recyclable materials. They separate wood, cardboard, carpet, shingles, metal, aluminum, copper, sheetrock, and concrete. There is a designated place for each different type of material.
How is each material recycled?
Wood is placed into a pile where it is crushed and hauled to the landfill. The landfill mulches the wood and utilizes it onsite or sells it back to customers to be used as landscaping mulch and boiler fuel.
Cardboard and plastics are placed into their assigned containers after being separated. They are then taken to third party recycling facilities that repurpose the material. Cardboard is recycled into paper bags, cardboard medium, paperboard, or new cardboard. Plastic is recycled into things such as plastic bottles, plastic bags, trash bags, lids, or milk jugs.
Carpet is placed into a tractor trailer. When the trailer is full, it is picked up and taken to another facility for further recycling.
Shingles are separated and then are placed in a container. They are later taken to an asphalt recycling plant. Recycled shingles are used for hot mix asphalt, which helps improve pavement performance. It is also used for cold patch material, to fill in potholes and make minor road repairs.
Metal, aluminum, and copper are all placed in separate bins and sent to a metal recycling company. Metal has multiple uses when recycled.
Concrete or brick is crushed and sold to contractors for building pads or can also be used for road cover.
